Is this new year said “two thousand ten” or “twenty-ten”?

I’m trying to get into the habit of saying “twenty-ten”. It makes more sense to me, especially since my whole life was lived in the “nineteens”. I was born in “nineteen fifty-three”. I graduated from high school in “nineteen seventy-one”. I got married in “nineteen seventy-three”.

But when the “turn of the century” came around, it was always “two thousand whatever”. And lots of times people said “two thousand and one”, “two thousand and three”, etc. It really became a mouthful.

Yesterday I was glad to hear our pastor refer to the new year as “twenty ten”. It’s so much easier that way…if we can get used to it.
