White House says Obama is Christian, prays daily
The Associated Press
Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 | 11:06 a.m.The White House insisted on Thursday that President Barack Obama is a Christian who prays daily as it looked to tamp down growing doubts among Americans about the president’s religion.
White House spokesman Bill Burton made the remarks hours after a poll showed that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim. That was up from 11 percent who said so in March 2009. The survey also showed that just 34 percent said Obama is Christian, down from 48 percent who said so last year. The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don’t know his religion.
As Obama headed out for a vacation, Burton told reporters aboard Air Force One that most Americans care more about the economy and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and “they are not reading a lot of news about what religion the president is.”
Burton added, “The president is obviously a Christian. He prays everyday.”

President Obama is a Christian? I never would have guessed.
The story is on lots of news outlets today. They want to dissuade people that Obama is a Muslim. With a name like Barack Hussein I can see why people aren’t so sure.
Be that as it may, we do know that Obama has been a member of the UCC (United Church of Christ), one of the most liberal, progressive “churches” in this country. Does that make him a Christian? Does one get figs from an olive tree?
If Obama wants to be seen as a Christian, I say let him produce fruit befitting a believer. After all, Muslims “pray every day” too!

Obama has been a member of “Rev.” Wright’s Trinity United Church Of Christ for many years. That particular church is part of James Cone’s cult of Black Liberation Theology, which has very little in common with any of the normative tenets of Christianity.
That still doesn’t make Obama a Muslim, but I’m in a lot a doubt that I could find much to laud about either group. That’s pretty sad coming from a Pagan who’s not especially fond of any of the variants of the Abrahamic faiths.

You’re right, jonolan, that doesn’t make him a Muslim. But I find it very difficult to approve him as a follower of Jesus Christ. There are too many groups/churches who want to wear the “Christian” label who simply do not fit the bill, and Obama’s “church” is one of those.

I have to wonder if he prays in the direction of Planned Parenthood’s headquarters.

As I said, Gary, he’s been a devotee of Black Liberation Theology for decades, or at least he has made a show of being one. Since they have little doctrinal similarities with Christianity it’d be hard to believe that Obama is a Christian.
Frankly, he seems to self-absorbed and narcissistic to be an adherent to any of the Abrahamic faith. At a guess I’d say that his daily prayers are said to himself while shaving. 😉

And each of you who are so critical use YOUR JOB as a platform for promoting your faith? No, you don’t. You’d probably get fired if you did. But you expect the President to do so.
None of the presidents in our adult lifetime have been regular church attenders – not the Reagan’s, not GHW Bush, not GW Bush, and not the Clintons, although – shock !- the Clintons went more often than most other presidents.
Obama says he is a Christian. He has given his testimony at the National Prayer Breakfast (have you given yours at work?). He has been forced to publicly declare his allegiance with our Savior. He has. Have you?
Beware! Gossip, lies and fear-mongering do not show any of us in a good light. “One of the ugliest things about American public life is the loud, showy religiosity that passes for profound Christian faith — the belligerent and frequently bigoted nonsense.”

Praying for the President’s removal from office each day is not praying FOR him.

You are my conscience as always, Mike. Nice to see you, brother!
I’m sure Obama is at least a “liberal” Christian, for what that’s worth, and we need to affirm here that it’s not up to any of us to judge his faith.
That being said, however, it mus also be said that there is a huge tent out there covering people who wear the “Christian” label, many of whom do not even believe in Jesus Christ and the things that make Him the object of our faith; some of whom do not even believe in God. Is Obama one of them? I can’t say, except for the fact that for many years he has associated himself with a denomination that fits that description. His extreme liberal political views also tie him to the “progressives” who try to pass themselves off as Christian. So if people become wary about the man’s faith, I think it’s only natural.
Even so, if Obama doesn’t wear his faith “on his sleeve”, the American people want to know where their president stands. Even if he were an atheist, at least we would know what to expect from him. I don’t think it’s the least bit out of order for the American people to expect to know such things about their president.

I noticed an interesting article at Worthy News this morning concerning an interview with Franklin Graham concerning the president’s faith and the mosque at ground zero in New York City. Read it at http://tinyurl.com/2uwvuub
